ivi & candace ~ waldorf astoria, orlando, florida wedding

Ivi and Candace were married at an intimate celebration at the elegant Waldorf Astoria last month. They brought some Big City glamor to Orlando and let me tell you, this wedding was one for the books!

*A heartfelt thank you goes out to my dear friend Michelle Guzman for rocking Camera 2 for me at this wedding!

Venue – Waldorf Astoria, Orlando, Florida
Date – July 3rd, 2011

Wedding Inspiration?
Two things: 1) The city that we live in, met in and fell in love with, and 2) we wanted to create a casual and fun environment.

Our wedding was in Orlando, but we wanted to capture the essence of NYC without “over-theming” it. We chose the Waldorf-Astoria not only because it was a beautiful place for a wedding, but it screams Manhattan. With the help of Tommy from Greenery Productions, we selected an image of our favorite part of Central Park, Sheep’s Meadow, as a wall-sized backdrop that set the tone of the room.   Some additional touches included the included the taxi-cab escort cards, and the NYC skyline menus created by Shanna Michele Designs.  We also had nitrogen ice-cream at the reception, after all,  what’s a walk in Central Park without a bite from your favorite ice cream stand?  And of course, the wedding party introduction was a dance-in welcome to “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z.

We also incorporated a gaming element into the wedding, as all of Ivi’s friends know this is one of his passions. Our cocktail hour had a casino gaming theme along with drinks – roulette, craps, blackjack and a horse game for kids.

Tommy was a master in helping us make our ideas come to life. During our first meeting, I knew that I wanted to incorporate NYC into the design and that I wanted a black/white color palette, but I didn’t have a clear concept beyond that. Looking at bridal magazines and blogs was leading me in all directions. By the end of our first call, which was about two hours long, we ironed out all of the details for flowers, table design, linen selection, and ceremony décor. He was able to understand my vision and enhance it with the suggestion of the Central Park backdrop and the room design. He also recommended the use of orchids, which were a great compliment to the overall décor. It all came together beautifully.

Our DJ was also an important selection for our ceremony. We wanted people to dance and we needed someone that could get everyone up and moving. Scott Messina was the person for it. Within 20 seconds of giving him the microphone, the entire room was on the dance floor. He required little direction, made our event feel very special and was a ton of fun. He, along with the ceremony Harpist Christine MacPhail, played a fun medley of popular songs during the cocktail hour. Although I didn’t get to experience this, my guests tell me it was a real treat!

The wedding planner and the team at the Waldorf were the key to ensure we were completing the right details and keeping us sane. They made planning such a beautiful event a breeze. Heather had great recommendations for vendors of all varieties, and we were certain we were getting the best people for our work in the area.

Favorite Moments?
I loved every moment of that day. However, the biggest surprise moments where walking down the aisle and seeing all the friends and family I had celebrated with the entire weekend as well as my fiancé’s face when we saw each other for the first time. It was emotionally powerful. We absolutely loved seeing the room for the first time, as it was more beautiful than we could have ever imagined. The first dance was another great moment. We were so busy and didn’t have time to practice all week, so we crossed our fingers and went with it. We chose an Adele song, “Right as Rain”, which I first heard on the Ugly Betty wedding during the series finale. And of course the impromptu karaoke at after the reception!

Wedding attire?
I think I was more in love with my shoes than my dress. The dress designer was a small Parisian boutique, Cymbeline and the shoes were Mui Mui. I chose a dress that was shorter in the front (to show off the shoes of course) because it was beautiful and elegant but also showed off my fun and flirty side. The bridesmaids wore light blue Watters and WTOO dresses they each selected from the collection. I loved them so much I wanted one for myself. Ivi’s suit and tie were from Zegna. His groomsmen all wore black suits with shirts, ties and cufflinks from Charles Tyrwhitt that were an eclectic mix of colors and patterns.

Favorite Blogs or Magazines for wedding planning?

Brides MagazineGreen Wedding ShoesNY Mag – Wedding EditionRuffledEtsy

My inspiration came primarily from Green Wedding Shoes and searches on Etsy. We ordered the menus and escort cards from Etsy as well as the ring bearer’s pillow. Also, the hotel pool had a lazy river, so all guests staying received a blown-up inner tube with their guest bag, which was a nice surprise upon entering the room.

Menu, Drinks, Dessert, Caterer, Baker?
We give the team at the Waldorf big stars for putting together a great menu option for the evening. Playing into the theme and because of my love for fancy cocktail drinks, we definitely wanted to have a signature drink available. Named Vig Juice after the bar we met in NYC, it incorporates some of our favorite ingredients (cucumber, jalapeño, sugar and tequila) and was delicious.  The cake was inspired by my love for ruffles and matched the colors of the bridal party. Red-Velvet was originated at the Waldorf-Astoria so it was the obvious choice. And of course you could accompany it with the Nitrogen ice cream in the park!

Wisdom to share with Brides?
Don’t fret over the small things. At the end of the day, it is enjoying the moment with your friends and family.
Focus on great vendors that understand what you are looking for, specifically the Photographer, DJ/Band, Florist and Venue. If this is a good mix, the rest of the details fall into place.
The wedding planner is worth it and usually pays for him/herself with the already established relationships with vendors.

A big thank you goes to all of the vendors that helped us to make this day so special and so US! The day was better than we ever anticipated and I was surprised how smoothly the event day ran – it was because of all of your hard work and dedication behind the scenes. It has been three weeks, and we still look back and talk about how amazing everything turned out.

And of course, we want to thank the friends and family that travelled near and far to spend this time with us. It was wonderful to have time not only on the wedding day, but throughout the weekend with everyone, including the salsa party and pool time on the lazy river. Our guests travelled from New York, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ohio, Dallas, and from all over Florida to be with us, and it was very special to have each and every one of them there.
