The Palladino Family ~ Wekiwa Springs State Park, Florida

Some of us just aren’t born to write. I would be one of the ‘some of us.’ I can make amazingly long lists, I like to write handwritten notes, I can come up with a few sentences for my blog. And that’s pretty much the extent of it. I tell photographic stories and pray that my images speak for me. Elaine however is one of the the gifted few who can not only wield a camera like a boss, she’s also an incredibly gifted writer. Her way with words is inspired and as I was prepping the images from our shoot together, I read her most recent  post “A Letter To My Unborn Son.” It is incredible and you just NEED to race over to her blog to read it too.

At the end of the letter to her son Logan, who was born just a weeks after their family session, she has a postscript that says…

“Be prepared to laugh.  A Lot.  It’s our favorite thing.”

And that’s the perfect way to introduce these images of the Palladino family to you. Be prepared to see a lot of laughing. It’s Elaine & Mike’s  favorite thing.

Thank you E & M.  First for your friendship.  And secondly for choosing me to to tell this story…

Jessica Connery Photography - Shipra, your photography always take my breath away. There is never anything contrived in your portraits and by the time I get to the end I feel like I know your couples. I love this session and how they are just being themselves. And the rain at the end? I died. Also, I hope Mike took his keys and cell phone out of his pocket before they got in the water:) Mike & Elaine, congratulations on the birth of your son Logan!!! Keep on laughing, one of the most important things you can teach your kids.

Sarah & Bryan on film ~ Chapel Hill, North Carolina

I’m not sure how it happened exactly, or even when, but I do know that I’m immeasurably grateful that it did in fact happen. What you ask? Well, I’ll tell you…me securing the friendship of a charming and creative photographer in North Carolina, Sarah Der.

Sarah is one of my favorite photographers and when I say that, it means she fits right into the extremely teeny tiny category of “who I would use as my own wedding photographer” if I could do it all over again. She has a sensitive eye for beauty, an amazing gift for capturing honest and heartfelt moments, makes images that are timeless, and has a fantastic personality. No matter how gifted a photographer is, that’s only part of the equation, having a great personality is invaluable in someone who’s going to be at your side ALL wedding day long!

Can you tell how much I adore her?

Her husband Bryan is a gentle soul who plays the guitar when he’s not being brilliant getting his masters degree at UNC. Sarah is a cook book addict who can often be found poring over them planning out delicious meals. They have a regal cat, Toulouse who condescended to let me pet him. We started their lifestyle session in their home. I have a thing lately for shooting people in their own personal spaces. I feel like it automatically creates a comfortable mood, and there’s something so special about making portraits of people in an environment that is uniquely theirs. It’s no wonder that the ‘at home’ part of our session was my favorite. After that we took a stroll around their Chapel Hill neighborhood. Here’s some of what we came away with…

personal work ~ film photography

My friend Kelly was having a model stop by her place so that she could shoot some personal work and (generous soul that she is) invited me to tag along and shoot if I wanted to.  Did I want to?  Um…yes.

Thanks, Kel!  xoxo

Having never worked with a real model before this was such a unique experience.  The model, Echo, has a very moody and high-fashion look which is very different from what I usually shoot and it was a challenge working with her look yet creating images that still reflect my personal style and aesthetic.  I shot a roll of film and walked away with these…

image details: shot on a Contax 645 camera with Portra 400 film. Scanned by the friendly folk at Indie Film Lab.

Jenna & Joshua ~ Dallas Heritage Village Wedding ~ Texas

Everyone once in a while you meet someone who just radiates joy and warmth. Jenna is one of those women. I met her when she was a bridesmaid for Liz’s wedding and I adored her from the moment she hugged me hello. Firstly because she smiles with her whole heart, and secondly because I saw how much she cherishes her friends (it’s remarkable how quickly she pulled me into her bubble of friendship!) When she contacted me about a year later to tell me she was engaged, there was not a doubt that I would do whatever I needed to do to be at her wedding! And thankfully, she felt the same way.
Jenna & Joshua’s Dallas Heritage Village wedding was a full of old-time charm and nostalgia. Throughout the day it was made abundantly clear that this is a couple that values tradition, faith, friendship, and heritage. From the self-made bouquets, to the glowing bride, to home-made lemonade and scones (mmmm,) to vintage handkerchiefs, to the deeply-touching vows under the eaves of the Millermore House, to laughter all day, to all the whimsy of the historical venue, it was pretty much a perfect wedding. Sometimes I have to pinch myself because it seems incredible to me that I get to photograph such lovely couples (mentally inserting a big ol hashtag BLESSED right here.)

Thank you, J&J. With all my love.
